To The Last Detail Parsons State Hospital Detail Shop opened in July of 1990 with the intention of teaching the residents of the hospital skills that could actually be used to find a job in the community should they be discharged. Detailing jobs in the community are all entry level positions with few considerations in regard to education or work history. This fact makes it an ideal area to target for vocational training of our residents. In 1992, the shop was give the name "To The Last Detail" and that is the name that has been used ever since. For the first six and one half years, the shop was located in a building on the grounds of PSH&TC. However, in that location, we had little opportunity for the people of the community in general to learn about us, so our business was limited to cleaning the vehicles of the State Hospital, the vehicles of the staff working at the State Hospital, and what little business we got from the community simply through word of mouth from people whose cars we had cleaned. In 1996, because of the limitations our location placed on us and the condition of the building we were located in, it was decided that we should make an attempt to relocate to a site in the community that our residents have the capability to do quality work and be productive members of the community. As a result of this decision, a proposal was presented to the Parsons State Hospital Endowment Association, asking for the funds necessary to make the move to a community site. They agreed to provide the necessary start up money, and the detail shop opened in it's current location at 2500 Main St., Parsons, KS in January of 1997. The success of the shop at this location has exceeded all of the expectations we had at the time of the move. In the three and one half years we have been in this location, our business has increased by nearly 500%, and we consistently have enough business that we are booking our appointments two to three weeks in advance. In addition, we now have a contract with the Parsons Post Office to clean their delivery trucks. This contract must be done after the trucks make their deliveries for the day, so a second shift here at the shop has been opened strictly to take care of this contract. This gives a different group of residents an opportunity to get off grounds and work in the community two evenings each week. The move to a community setting has given us the opportunity to expose the residents to what it is like to work in a community setting, increase our business to the point that we are basically self supporting, and to show the people of the community how productive our residents can be. None of this would have been possible without the assistance and support we have been given by the businessmen of our community that form the Parsons State Hospital Endowment Association, and we would like to thank them for their help.
