Examples of A.T. devices that can help a person live:

Positioning Technology: all for participation in activities.

Examples: sidelying frames and floor sitters; straps, trays, and standing aids; bean bag chairs/sand bags; customized wheelchairs, chair inserts.

Self-Care Support: things necessary to eat, dress, and take care of themselves. Examples: adapted utensils, modified toilet seats, aids for brushing teeth, long handled brush for showering, zipper pull for dressing.

Environmental Controls: devices to enable someone to use equipment independently at home, school, work, community. Examples: remote-control switches; on/off switch adaptions; touch switches to operate equipment

SIGNS OF A SWALLOWING PROBLEM:

  • Feeling food sticking in the mouth or throat
  • Repeated pneumonia or chest congestion
  • Wet/gurgly voice especially at mealtime
  • Chocking or coughing during meals
  • Extra effort or time needed to eat
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Low grade temperature
  • Loss of appetite
  • Drooling
